I'd found that interesting when I read it over the weekend.

But here's the thing - the folks that watch it HAVE to do homework, and keep up with the news. Or the funny isn't as funny.

Agreed. That's one of the things that I like about him. He makes me think, both before the joke, so I can understand his setup, and after the punchline, so I can appreciate the funny.

Carlin was similar, but he tailored his jokes to his goof-ball point of view; Stewart maintains the straight-man "WTF just happened here?" aspect. Carlin went for the absurd, but Stewart charges ahead with a such a monomaniacal, paranoid "WTF? WTF! WTF!!!" that he can't help being hilarious.
