A Note of Clarification

I should add that I do not wish to tell other people how they should feel about the posthumous conversion thing. As Rabbi Asher Lopatin put it in the NYT article: people are going to have different feelings about it, and those feelings need to be respected.

I do not think that the people upset about it are necessarily wrong. I am simply saying I don't happen to share the concern. It is rather like the time many years ago when I was clerking when a fellow Jew asked me quietly at Christmass time: "Does it bother you as much as it bothers me that the entire courthouse is completely decked out for Christmas?" My answer was no, it didn't, because that really doesn't bother me. That doesn't make it any less oppressive or alienating or whatever to those whom it does bother.
