Good NYT Piece on the Problem w/Cell Phones
Usually the problem with arguing that regulation will promote innovation and competition is that it is hard to prove what the future holds. In the wireless world, I can point to how requiring AT&T to allow any device to attach to its network (what we call the Carterfone
rule after the FCC case in question) but can find plenty of argument that the current wireless situation is different.
Which is why I like this piece by David Pogue on his visit to a European cell phone trade show. http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/07/05/are-us-cellphone-carriers-calcified/
We don't have to speculate whether a different rule set would produce better results. We can see it.
