Republicans Continue To Run Same Playbook
Just as it took waaaay too long for the Dems to figure out that the 1990s were over and start thinking about how to campaign effectively, Republicans are having the same problem.

For example, the whole "control access by the media" thing.

As this story from Tampa notes, reporters at a Sarah Palin rally were politely but firmly prevented from speaking to any of Palin's supporters in the crowd because "in the past, negative things had been written."

Perhaps I'm wrong. Lord knows I have been before, but every fiber of my being tells me that this election is fundamentally different because a lot of people have woken up to the fact that this stuff really matters to them personally. Trying to limit access and playing cutsie games will not cut it.

And, despite repeated floggings, the Ayers thing is just not competing well against the market collapse. The McCain campaign is not going to be able to "change the debate" away from issues to "character" because people do not have that luxury. And a lot more people are going to vote than have in the last 20 years.

That doesn't automatically translate into an Obama win. But it does mean that McCain better start making a real case rather than listening to the graduates of the Karl Rove campaign school of tribal manipulation.
