OooooooKkkkkkkkkk..........

Robert McFadden, former director of the Ohio Office of Faith-Based Initiatives, arrested for promoting 17-yr old prostitute.

Actually, the revolting one for me in the story is the casual mention that one of the ringleaders was "a sex-abuse caseworker at Franklin County Children Services." But the idea of religious hypocrisy and a higher ranking state official apparently gets precedence in the news over "oh yeah, and one of the guys running the prostitution ring was actually charged with protecting sexually abused children and helping them recover."

Somedays, I fear for our media. Other days, I'm certain. The later are much more depressing.

Declan is Unhappy. Pwoooor Decwaaaaannnnnnn!!!!!!

Declan McCullagh is one of the many reasons why traditional journalism is losing to the blogosphere. As far as I can tell, the only difference between Declan and myself are (a) I say I am writing my opinions instead of pretending to do reporting, and (b) I actually know WTF I am talking about.

Declan has just discovered that the broadband stimulus money will not be a free give away but will require that anyone taking the money adhere to the FCC's "4 Principles" on network openness. Mind, I regard this as pretty weak tea, seeing as how the FCC already said they were enforceable (allow me to preempt my Libertarian readers by observing the DC Circuit will settle this eventually and yes, I know you are outraged because you don't understand administrative law think this abused process and that I am a terrible person for not understanding this blah blah blah Ginger). Declan, however, is quite outraged. Mind, I would have no trouble with that if he put it on his blog or pushed it as an editorial rather than pretending it is a news story.

Still, we now get to point (b), Declan does not know WTF whereof he speaks (heck, the man can't tell the difference between a news piece and editorial, what did I expect). As I observed in my previous post, if'n y'all don't like what the government as purchaser wants DON"T TAKE PUBLIC MONEY!! Know what we call a Libertarian that takes public money - a whore.

New Matras for Progressives

If you would like to advance progressive economic and social policies in this country, please consider the following useful mantras. If you like them, help popularize them.

"Better than Bush" is not the baseline.

If you want results, you must take the actions that will produce those results. Policy doesn't just happen.

For the Word is not in Heaven that you will say "who shall ascend into Heaven and bring it down for us that we may hear and obey?" Nor is the Word over the sea that you shall say "who shall go over the sea and bring it back to us, that we may hear and obey?" For the Word is very near to you, it is in your mouth and your heart to DO it. (Deut. 30:12-14) (emphasis added).

Because I swear, if I hear one more supposed progressive want to tell me how X, Y or Z is impossible or bad policy without bestirring his or her lazy rear-end, I am gonna slap him/her with the Bitch Slap of Reason.

People like to say "if you don't vote you can't complain." What nonsense. The test of citizenship is not our willingness to stand in line every 4 years (or, if you are a real "activist," every 2 years) and select from a predetermined list the candidate we like most or hate least. The test is whether, in an era when we have made it easier than ever to follow the workings of our government and make our feelings known, we sit idly by or stand for our own. If nothing else, be prepared to take two minutes at a critical time and call your elected officials.

Maybe it won't do any good. But if you don't even try to the extent you can, then don't complain.
