Random Exegitical Thought --Perhaps Prompted By The Annual Thanksgiving Debate

Both historically and at present, there is an argument within the religious Jewish Community on the extent to which the study of non-religious subjects has value and the permissibility of taking on customs and practices from the secular world. For example, should one study the works of the classic or modern philosophers or other disciplines to gain insight into the nature of God, halacha, and the world rather than merely to acquire skills to make a living? Should one observe non-Jewish "holidays" like Thanksgiving or the Fourth of July?
