George Washington Preaches Tolerance

This was George Washington's letter to the Jewish congregation of Newport, RI after they sent him a letter congratulating him on his election as President. At the time, the United States was the only country in the world under which Jews did not labor under some legal disability -- assuming they were allowed at all. The adoption of a new Constitution permitting freedom of religion and the election of a new president must have engendered both hope and anxiety.

Washington's letter is a tribute to the ideal in this country of religious tolerance. It bears repeating.
