Good for NY

I am pleased by the NY vote on Marriage Equality for a bunch of reasons. Most importantly, it is a legislative victory. Wone by hard work and endless lobbying and persuasion after a loss previously. Perhaps more importantly, in a Republican dominated Senate where state Republicans are not at the mercy of national Republican trends.

There is a mistaken belief that fundamental rights should just be granted naturally. That the people and the courts should just recognize them as a matter of reason, or nobless oblige. Nonsense. No freedom has come without struggle, and without the need to convince a majority that those without rights deserve them. The NY vote affirms this essential truth. That such struggles can prevail, and they are more firm and lasting by arriving through long struggle.
