Interesting from NPR about making money as a band. Note that when the Poises, the band in question, signed with a big label and had all the "success" by conventional measures, the actually lost money -- it got sucked away by Geffen, the major producer. This is a fairly common story.

Happily, the internet enables new business models. Which is why the RIAA "defends artists" by trying to kill it.
