New York State Senator Roy McDonald (R) Moves Me With His Eloquence

Whether or not one agrees with his final decision on NY's marriage equality bill, I find Roy McDonald's statement to the press on how he could change his mind, defy his party, and vote for the bill to be the most eloquent and refreshing statement of legislative principle I have seen in some time.

I am minded of Rep. George Michaels, 41 years ago, stating "I know by doing this I am ending my political career . . . but Mr. Speaker, what is the use of getting elected, or getting reelected, if you don't stand for something?"

Roy McDonald's statement provided below in unedited form.

"You get to the point where you evolve in your life where everything isn't black and white, good and bad, and you try to do the right thing. You might not like that. You might be very cynical about that. Well, fuck it, I don't care what you think. I'm trying to do the right thing. I'm tired of Republican-Democrat politics. I'm tired of blowhard radio people, blowhard television people, blowhard newspapers. They can take the job and shove it. I come from a blue-collar background. I'm trying to do the right thing, and that's where I'm going with this."
